Portsmouth East Competes at Athens

The Portsmouth East Marching Band once again had a successful venture into competition this past Saturday (10/07), competing in the 26th annual Athens Marching Band Invitational. Performing in class C, the band received Best Auxiliary, Best Field Commander, and Second Place Band, Class C. Congratulations to the first place band, Wahama High School (West Virginia), for not only winning Class C Band and Percussion awards, but also winning the overall Grand Champion award with an astounding score of 271!

Portsmouth East finished overall as 4th Runner-Up to Grand Champion, although the difference in score between Portsmouth East and 1st Runner-Up Berne Union was less than 3 points on the 300 point scale, indicating  an EXTREMELY close competition for all of the top bands involved at Athens this weekend.

Here's a complete rundown of all of the awards:

Class C: Best Auxiliary, Portsmouth East; Best Percussion, Wahama; Best Field Commander, Portsmouth East; 3rd Place Band, Eastern; 2nd Place Band, Portsmouth East; 1st Place Band, Wahama

Class B: Best Auxiliary, Fairfield Union; Best Percussion, Fairfield Union; Best Field Commander, Maysville; 3rd Place Band, Chesapeake; 2nd Place Band, Minford; 1st Place Band, Fairfield Union

Class A: Best Auxiliary, Warren-Local; Best Percussion, Berne Union; Best Field Commander, Berne Union; 3rd Place Band, Chillecothe; 2nd Place Band, Gallia Academy; 1st Place Band, Berne Union

Class AA: Westland swept all awards in AA, being the only band in that class.

Overall: Best Percussion, Wahama; Best Music, Gallia Academy; Best General Effect, Wahama; Best Marching, Wahama; Grand Champion, Wahama

Although overall placement awards were not given, besides Grand Champion, the top five bands are listed here due to the closeness of this competition, starting from 1st to 5th: Wahama, Berne Union, Westland, Gallia Academy, Portsmouth East.
