October 21, 2000 Portsmouth East Finishes Season Grand Champions On Saturday, October 21, the Portsmouth East Marching Band, amidst stormy weather and technical difficulties, received its third Grand Championship of the 2000 season at Green High School. The auxiliary, percussion, and drum major Kelli Schisler all received overall first place awards, ending the regular season with a total sweep. Unfortunately, many bands, including all of Portsmouth East's class (Class AA) competition left early due to a terrible electrical storm that delayed the event for over an hour. Portsmouth East was, in fact, prepared to depart right before it was announced that the competition would resume. Congratulations also go out to the Minford High School Marching Band, which qualified for OMEA State Finals for the first time in recent history (the band resumed competitive performance in 1999 after having been absent for many years). Band Awards Class C : 1st Place,
Symmes Valley; 2nd Place, Eastern Brown Overall 3rd Runner-Up : Portsmouth Congratulations to all bands that performed in competitive events this year! Although some of the bands may not have qualified for OMEA State Finals, these bands should not be discouraged. It is an unequivocal fact that your performances throughout the year brought much joy to marching band fans, boosters, and students alike. Sometimes bands put too much on the numbers, and forget to realize that they have created and improved upon works of art for many months. Thank you very much for a great season, bands. To those bands that did qualify, congratulations to you as well. This is the first time in many years that this many of South Central Ohio's bands will be attending finals. Participants from the local area include (in order of qualification date): Portsmouth East, Rock Hill, Green, Northwest, Portsmouth West, Ironton, and Minford. Congratulations to all bands on one of the most exciting years to date! To the bands that made finals, Portsmouth East wishes you the best of luck! |
