East Gains New Director

The East Marching Band, once again, has gained a new director for the 2001-2002 season. Mr. Scott Brehm has been hired as Director of Bands, becoming the first director at the newly formed East High School. Promising to enthusiastically maintain the band's dedication to hard work and beautiful music, Scott Brehm met with most of the students and boosters for the first time on Saturday, June 30. Mr. Brehm promised that he was just as excited as the students, and that, "This is not just a stepping stone for a job at Portsmouth High School."

A probable candidate for the 2001 competition show was also mentioned at this meeting, but given the tentative nature of the current state-of-affairs, this website will refrain from reporting it until it is confirmed.

East Breaks from Portsmouth City Schools

In addition to a new band director, the band also faces changes in the school itself. Instead of peacefully agreeing to consolidate with Portsmouth High School, Sciotoville residents have fought to maintain a high school in Sciotoville. After more than a year of opposition, legal wrangling, and organization, a new "Sciotoville Community School" has been created. To keep with tradition, the school will be known as East High School, and will retain its mascot, the Tartan, as well as its school colors.

Although the students will be attending classes in the same school building, many new faces will grace the faculty and staff at East, including, as we have mentioned, the band director. However, if all of these new teachers can make the same impression that Scott Brehm has, then the students should have nothing to worry about.

Good Luck East!
